Training Your Dog
This breed is extremely athletic and bright and requires exercise for the body and the mind. If you take on a puppy, it is your RESPONSIBILITY to train it to be a good citizen in both your house and out in public. This training is entirely on you as the new owner and if you are nonchalant about training, you will wind up with a dog that is a nuisance and a burden. You are taking on a sentient being that has as many "needs" as a human baby and you should be prepared to devote significant time into this animal.
All dog owners should expect to invest a significant amount of time into training their dogs. We require enrollment in puppy manners classes throughout your puppy's first year of life and hope that you will consider training well beyond that point. Just as you would not expect a child graduating kindergarten to read Dicken's novels, you should not expect your puppy to "know" everything after a single 6-8 week puppy class. Your dog will thrive and be a fabulous companion if you invest in a number of manners classes that advance the dog into being able to cope with the kinds of distractions that are found in the real world. We strongly recommend that you go through the AKC Star Puppy program and then train for a Canine Good Citizen program. including the Urban Good Citizen program.
You can also think about online training as an additional way to train when you are not in a formal, in-person class. Two programs designed for owners of young puppies are OneMind Dog's Puppy program that can be accessed via computer or phone. Ian Dunbar also offers a subscription course on Training Your Puppy that can be helpful. There is also a 30 day free course offered through Pupford by George Zak (https://pupford.com/30-day-perfect-pup-with-zak-george/) and then you can continue further with a paid subscription to additional training if you so desire. Jane Killion of Puppy Culture offers a $100 online course that is designed to help you get ready for and then bring a puppy into your home.
These online resources, when combined with in-person classes, can really help keep you engaged in daily training sessions with your pup and can really help you develop a strong and happy relationship that will pay off throughout your dog's lifetime.
