We raise our puppies using Puppy Culture protocols that begin with early socialization activities and use the standard Volhard aptitude test to see what individual puppies need to work on prior to going to their new homes. In 2021, we added a scentwork aptitude test to determine which puppies might be best suited for training in scentwork (AKC, NACSW, PSD, and/or Barnhunt and Happy Ratters).

WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK FOR WHEN SEEKING A PUPPY??
Understand that PWDs are a "working" breed. This means that they require a job to be happy -- that job can be anything: fetching things for you, tricks, finding odors ("nosework"), etc. When looking for a puppy, be sure to ask your breeder whether the dam and sire come from working lines or from show lines or from pet lines. It's important that you get a puppy that will fit your lifestyle! A good breeder will take your needs and lifestyle into account and will choose a puppy for you that will be a good fit.
You also need to be concerned with health. All breeds (and mutts) can get a variety of diseases and disorders. However, modern genetic testing allows breeders to make informed decisions about their dams and sires and those to whom they will breed. Breed-specific genetic tests allow breeders to avoid producing affected puppies. Learn what tests are required by the parent club of the breed via OFA's Browse by Breed page. You can look up the parents of a litter on the OFA website to see if they have been tested and have received a "CHIC" certificate which indicates that the breeding dog has met all requirements of testing. In some cases, you may see a "cleared by parentage" status rather than an actual test number. What does "cleared by parentage" mean? Click here for an infographic from the PWD Foundation.
