We are a small hobby kennel that may breed once a year or not at all. We are interested in producing a line that is clear of as many health problems as possible and that produces great temperaments with work ethics and great structure.
Portuguese Water Dogs are wonderful animals, full of exuberance, fiercely loyal and loving to family, and very intelligent, but they are not necessarily the breed for everyone. This is a working breed, which means that these dogs were bred to work daily and not just sit around -- without some kind of work, they can be very destructive. With sufficient and consistent training early on, they can be good with older children, but they are not a good match for families with young children. Puppies are adorable but they have a mouthful of sharp knives, use their mouths for everything, are very bitey when teething, and have very hard mouths unlike labs and golden retrievers. Puppies can be very challenging for the home that is not prepared to deal with their activity level and mouthiness. Overall, the breed is very athletic, has a terrific nose and excellent eyesight, and thus is superb for a number of performance venues. Best of all, they have a wicked sense of humor and can provide many hours of amusement and laughter. Owners who learn to channel their dog's behavior and energy will be rewarded with a fantastic companion for many years to come. See our recent podcast on The Quirky Dog for more information on the breed. One of us is an avid dog trainer who teaches manners, tricks, and rally, and is a CGC/Trick evaluator at two local training facilities; we hope to help prospective owners understand the importance and FUN of training your companion. Through this website, we hope to deliver a good amount of training information to help you raise your puppy and to wisely choose puppy and adult dog classes at appropriate training facilities. We also hope to be a clearinghouse for information about health issues in the breed and information that can help you can better manage the health of your dog so that you can enjoy a long relationship with what we hope will be your best friend. Watch us train our dogs here. Even if you only want a pet and have to go to another breeder as we have no puppies available, we hope you will find our website useful as it has information about the breed and many helpful links on training a puppy of any breed. As a visitor to our page said, "... I'm a first time dog mom so I've had to do a lot of research on training, pet proofing, etc - and your page has been a giant help to me. I wanted to reach out to let you know and to say thanks." Make sure you can afford a dog -- check out this calculator to see typical annual expenses! |
